I'd like to correct an assumption made by Colleen. Bethany Hughes received several blood transfusions as a minor. She was later declared a "mature minor" and the custody order was withdrawn. Bethany then refused any further blood transfusions, took alternative treatment, and died. Her rights and freedoms were not dismissed.

Its funny and ironic, if you think about it. Order a court demanded blood transfusion and possibly save a child's life. Then the child grows up and takes you to court. How about being thankful that these doctors saved a child's life and saved a son or daughter?

It's important to notice that the second paragraph of this article states "Ed. note: Bethany Hughes ultimately received several court-ordered transfusions. She died in spite of these." So would having obeyed or at least taken into consideration her religious wishes, have saved her? We'll never know, but this case is interesting because she was clearly of sound mind and mature enough to make her own decisions according to the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and yet her Rights were completely dismissed. Why should any of our decisions be overlooked and made for us by someone else, just because they are part of the Government, we are all just human afterall, no one person is greater than another.
